RPO Alert X Gift is a run pass option out of Shotgun U Off Trips with 12 personnel that gives the QB a true run alert built into the trips side read. The diagram shows the run action tucked underneath with the running back sliding to the flat area while the two outside receivers stack vertical stems, one running a straight vertical seam and the other breaking into a corner route off the top of the stem. The RB flat route is the built in RPO alert key that tells the QB to throw hot if a defender crashes down on the run, while the seam and corner combo on top gives a true pass beater against man or zone coverage if the box stays honest. Primary read progression starts with the alert key on the run fit defender, then climbs to the seam runner underneath the corner route breaking outside for a true two level stretch on the perimeter.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify the run fit defender that is being read for the RPO alert, usually the flat or overhang defender near the trips side

If the defender keys the run and steps down, pull and throw hot to the RB flat route immediately for an easy conversion

Against zone shells with a deep half safety, target the seam runner before the corner route defender can rob the throwing window

Use hot routes to adjust the corner route into a deeper fade if you see a rolled up corner sitting on the flat

Pair this with Read Option and Lead Read Option earlier in a series so the defense has to respect the run fit before you come back with the X Gift alert for an explosive shot play
