Breakdown

PA Jet Cross runs off jet motion action from the trips side, with the play fake selling outside zone before the QB rolls into the pocket to survey the crossing routes. The backside X runs a deep crosser all the way across the field while the inside slot runs a shallow drag underneath it, creating a natural high low crosser combo that stretches linebackers horizontally. On the trips side the outside receiver pushes vertical up the numbers while the underneath route works the flat, giving you a full field stretch off play action. This is primarily a man beater given the deep cross creates natural separation against man coverage leverage, and the primary read progression starts with the deep crosser, works down to the shallow drag, then checks the flat route as the outlet.

Defensive Reads

Watch the strong safety pre-snap, if he cheats down into the box to respect the jet sweep action he cannot help over the top on the deep crosser. Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is the shell that gets exploited hardest, since the deep cross will win against trailing defenders every time. Zone coverage with linebackers sitting at intermediate depth can clog the shallow drag and deep crosser lanes, so be ready to check to the flat route in that situation. If the defense shows Cover 3 with a deep middle defender sitting in the crosser's path, that user controlled lurker can jump the route, so hold the ball and let the play develop before throwing. Blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge can be an issue since play action rollout mechanics slow the QB's ability to escape, so identify overload blitz looks pre-snap and be ready to throw the flat route quickly as a hot outlet.

Usage Tips

Use the jet motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the sweep action, then let the play action freeze them for an extra beat before your first read comes open.

Check the deep crosser first against man coverage since it is your explosive play window, but if you see a two high shell hold that route and work to the shallow drag underneath instead.

Hot route the flat route to a hitch or curl if you are getting a lot of underneath zone drop from the linebackers sitting on the drag.

Pair this play with PA Jet Sweep and Jet Sweep itself earlier in a drive so the defense respects the motion and bites on the run fake, which opens up the crossers even more.

Best used on second and medium or first down when defenses are more likely to play run action or use base personnel that struggles to cover the deep cross in space.
