Mtn Duo is a Duo-scheme run play out of Shotgun U Off Trips with 12 personnel, designed to double team the play side defensive lineman at the point of attack before climbing to the second level. The offensive line uses vertical double teams to create movement and seal the front, allowing the running back to press the line and pick his gap based on linebacker flow rather than a predetermined lane. This is a run play, not a pass concept, so the primary read progression belongs to the ball carrier: press the double team, read the play side linebacker fill, and cut off the block of the fullback or second tight end at the second level.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth pre-snap. If he is stacked tight to the line expecting run, user him immediately at the snap since Duo blocking is designed to climb and wall off exactly that defender. Identify the safety shell before the snap. Two high safeties with light boxes are the ideal Duo Duo beater, this play punishes light fronts far more than stacked eight man boxes. Post snap, key the play side defensive end and three technique. If they get pushed off the ball by the double team, the linebacker fit becomes the only real obstacle, so user that linebacker to make the tackle. Look for a user controlled defender flowing hard to the play side gap on the snap. Duo often bounces backside off the double teams once the initial gap clogs, so respect the backside cutback lane when defending it. Man coverage disguised as a run blitz is the biggest threat to this play. If a linebacker blitzes downhill untouched from depth, the scheme has no answer since Duo relies on double teams climbing in time, not on a lead blocker picking up an extra rusher.

Usage Tips

Run this play on early downs, ideally first and ten or second and short, to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense guessing between run and pass out of trips formations.

Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or fewer in the box with trips receivers spread out, Mtn Duo becomes an efficient gap scheme run since the double teams can win one on one at the second level.

Use the left stick to manually steer the running back through the mesh point instead of relying on the CPU logic. Duo blocking rewards patience, so let the double teams climb before committing to a lane.

Pair Mtn Duo with Mtn QB Blast and Mtn PA TE Leak from the same formation shell to keep linebackers honest. The identical pre-snap look forces defenders to respect both the QB run threat and the play-action leak off the same Duo action.

Against defenses that load the box with an extra safety or crash a linebacker downhill, switch to RPO Alert Bubble or RPO Read Flat from the same set to punish overaggressive run fits without changing personnel.
