Breakdown

PA Post Shot runs a play-action shot play out of the trips side with a deep post from the inside slot receiver as the clear-out shot route, a deep crossing route from the middle of the field breaking hard to the opposite sideline, and an outside receiver clearing vertically before working back across the field on a deep dig-style breaker. The lone route to the boundary side runs a shallow drag across the formation. This is a shot play designed to attack single high safety looks and man coverage, with the post route as the clear primary read against Cover 1 or Cover 3 and the crossing route as the man beater answer versus press man coverage on the outside.

Defensive Reads

Identify single high safety alignment before the snap, this play is built to exploit Cover 1 and Cover 3 shells where the post has a clean lane behind the linebackers. Watch for the deep safety sinking with the post route, if he stays home in the middle of the field this signals Cover 3 and you should look to the crossing route instead. User the deep half or deep third defender to sit on the post route, this is the single biggest threat to shutting down this concept since the route design funnels right into that zone. Key linebacker depth at the snap, if they sprint to their run fits on the play-action fake, spy or rob the crossing route with a linebacker to prevent the easy completion underneath the post. Press man coverage on the outside receiver can disrupt timing on the crossing route, but leaves the post vulnerable if the safety cheats up expecting run.

Usage Tips

Check the safety count before the snap, if you see one deep safety this is a green light to trust the post route on your primary read.

Use motion out of trips to identify man versus zone coverage before the snap, if the defender follows across the formation you know it is man and the crossing route becomes your hot read.

Hold play-action long enough to sell the run fake, this play punishes linebackers and safeties who bite on the run action, especially on early down calls like first and ten or second and short.

Pair this with QB Power G or Duo Wrap earlier in a drive to get the defense keying run action, then hit PA Post Shot once the safety starts creeping into the box.

Against zone shells, work your eyes to the deep crosser first since the post will run into the deep zone defenders, and use the drag route as your checkdown if both deep routes are covered.
