Z Short Cross out of Shotgun U Off Trips is a quick-hitting man beater built around the Z receiver working a shallow crossing route underneath the trips side to create natural rub separation against man coverage. The 12 personnel grouping keeps both tight ends in to help in protection or work short option routes, giving the quarterback a built-in checkdown if the cross gets picked up late. The primary read progression starts with the Z on the short cross, works to the underneath option route from the tight end, and ends with the running back as the outlet against a hard blitz.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and corner alignment on the trips side since press man corners and single high safety looks are prime opportunities for the Z to win on the shallow cross. If linebackers are shaded toward the trips formation with tight depth, expect an underneath robber or lurk defender sitting in the crossing lane, so be ready to work the tight end option route instead. Post-snap, track any user controlled defender flowing across the field to trail the cross, since a well timed user lurk can jump the route and turn it into a turnover opportunity. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with man matchups on the outside are the most vulnerable shells to this concept because of the natural traffic created by the trips alignment. Zone heavy shells like Cover 2 or Cover 4 with linebackers sitting underneap are the toughest defense against this play, since they clog the shallow crossing lane and force the quarterback to hold the ball or check down early.

Usage Tips

Look for man coverage indicators pre-snap like corners lined up tight on the trips receivers before snapping this play, since the crossing route is designed to rub off traffic against man defenders. If the defense shows two high safeties and soft corners, consider hot routing the Z to a shorter drag or checking to a different concept since zone defenders will simply sit in the crossing lane. Use this play on early downs and third and short situations where the quick cross and tight end option give the quarterback a safe, high percentage completion to stay ahead of the chains. Pair this play with PA Jet Cross or Mesh Wheel in your play calling sequence so the defense sees similar crossing action and cannot key on the short cross versus the deeper wheel and post routes. Against aggressive blitz looks, get the ball out on rhythm to the crossing route or check it down to the running back rather than holding the ball, since the extra rushers will collapse the pocket quickly.
