This is a Cover 3 beater by design, using the flood to stress the deep third defender and the flat defender simultaneously, with the primary read progression going corner route first, then working down to the dig and checking the flat as the underneath outlet.

Defensive Reads

Key the deep third safety on the trips side immediately after the snap because if he stays flat footed reading run action, the corner route will be open behind him for an explosive gain. Watch the flat defender or curl to flat defender since a hard jump on the underneath flat route usually means the corner route is uncontested behind it. Against Cover 3, the seam and deep third rotation is the primary vulnerability, so look for late rotating safeties who cannot get enough width to the sideline in time. Against Cover 1 or Cover 0 blitz looks, this play is risky because the play action fake will not hold linebackers who are already keying the backfield for a blitz, so be ready to check down to the flat quickly. If you see two high safeties rotating down, hot route the flat route into a quick option or check the backside crosser earlier since the corner route window will be tighter against Cover 4 or Cover 2. Use this play on second and long or third and medium situations where the defense is more likely to sit in a zone shell rather than blitz.
