PA TE Out is a play-action pass out of the U Off Trips set that shows run action to the backfield before the QB pulls up to throw. Off the fake, the backside receiver runs a deep vertical route while the trips side shows a TE breaking outside on an out route underneath a receiver clearing out over the top, and the outside trips receiver runs a shallow drag across the field to hold underneath defenders. The primary read starts with the TE out route as the quick, timing-based throw, then progresses to the vertical shot on the backside if the safety bites on the run fake, with the underneath drag as the checkdown against zone drops.
Defensive Reads
Watch the safety depth pre-snap, a safety creeping into the box signals a run blitz and opens up the backside vertical route for an explosive gain. Key the flat defender or curl to flat player after the snap, if he sits and reads the TE out route this becomes a tougher completion. Man coverage on the TE is a green light since the out route creates natural separation with the sideline as leverage. Cover 3 with a fast-flowing linebacker to the trips side can undercut the TE out route, so be ready to reset to the vertical shot or the drag. Watch for a user-controlled defender flying downhill on the play-action fake, this often leaves the deep vertical route or the drag wide open depending on where he commits.
Usage Tips
Use this on early downs when defenses are keyed on the run to maximize the play-action hold on linebackers and safeties.
Check pre-snap for single high safety looks since the backside vertical route has the best chance to break open against Cover 3 or Cover 1.
If the defense shows two high safeties, work the TE out route first since it settles into the void underneath the corner and in front of the safety.
Pair this play with HB Power or Inside Zone from the same formation so the run action sells and defenders stay honest against the fake.
Use the drag route as your answer against blitzes since it clears the shallow area fast and gives the QB a quick outlet before pressure arrives.
