HB Power out of Shotgun U Off Trips is a gap scheme run play built around a pulling guard leading the HB through the point of attack. The line executes down blocks to seal the interior while the backside guard pulls to kick out or lead through the hole, and the diagram shows a straightforward downhill run design with no route concept attached since the trips receivers stay off screen as decoys. The primary read for the HB is to press the mesh point, get on the hip of the pulling guard, and read the kickout block before deciding to bend the run outside or cut back inside the trash.

Defensive Reads

Watch linebacker depth pre-snap. Stacked or crashing linebackers signal they are keying the pulling guard and will fill the hole fast, which means you should be ready to cut back. Identify the strong safety alignment. If he is cheating into the box pre-snap, that is an extra run defender and the play loses its blocking advantage. Look for user defenders spying the pulling guard. A user linebacker sitting in the hole is trying to blow up the kickout block, so patience and a cutback lane become critical. This play struggles against a hard edge blitz from the trips side since it removes the natural gap the pulling guard is trying to reach. Base 4-3 or 3-4 fronts with light boxes are the best matchup since the gap scheme wins one on one blocks and creates a clean crease for the HB.

Check the box count pre-snap. If the defense has six or more in the box versus your five blockers, consider checking to a quick game pass or motioning a receiver to adjust numbers.
