Breakdown

HB Off Tackle out of Shotgun Trips Y-Flex is a designed downhill run that attacks the edge just outside the offensive tackle. The diagram shows the HB taking a lateral step before pressing upfield through the B or C gap behind the play side tackle and tight end, with the offensive line executing a down block scheme to seal interior gaps and create a lane off tackle. This is a base run play, not a zone or man beater in the passing sense, and it is designed to punish defenses that sell out against inside zone or spread out too wide in their trips coverage shell.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify linebacker depth and alignment, since off tackle hits hard against light boxes and defenses playing two high safeties with only one true run support defender near the line. Watch for a defensive end or edge player crashing hard down inside, which opens the alley for a bigger gain if the HB presses outside quickly. Post-snap, key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows outside immediately this play gets shut down and you should have a cutback plan. This run struggles against stacked eight man fronts or heavy blitz packages that send extra defenders off the edge, since the numbers advantage disappears. User controlled defenders spying the mesh point or lurking in the B gap can blow this play up before the back reaches the line, so avoid calling it into known run blitz tendencies.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap motion or a quick glance at the box count to confirm the defense has six or fewer defenders in the box before snapping this play.

Attack odd fronts and defenses that shift their line toward the trips side, since that leaves the off tackle lane thinner on the backside.

Pair this with HB Mid Draw and Inside Zone earlier in a series so the defense commits to reading run flow to the interior, then hit them with the off tackle bounce for an explosive gain.

If the defense stacks the box with an extra linebacker or safety, check into Read Option or PA WR In from the same formation to keep them honest.

Use the left or right stick to manually press the hole and cut off the puller or lead blocker rather than relying purely on the CPU logic, especially against aggressive user linebackers flowing hard to contain.
