Breakdown

Stick N Nod is a quick-hitting Stick concept run from Trips Y-Flex out of Shotgun 11 personnel, designed to punish zone coverage with high-low stick reads to the trips side while giving the quarterback an easy backside nod route as a man beater outlet. The trips side runs the classic stick combo (flat, stick, corner or seam) that stresses underneath zone defenders and creates natural picks against man coverage, while the Y-Flex tight end works a nod release that settles versus zone or breaks off the top against man. Primary read progression starts with the stick (middle) route for the sit-down completion versus zone, then works to the flat route if a linebacker widens to take away the stick, with the backside nod as the built-in answer against man coverage or if the trips side gets jumped.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify single high versus two high safety alignment, since Cover 3 and Cover 1 leave the stick route vulnerable to a sitting linebacker while Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells tighten the flat to stick window. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks into the stick throwing lane the quick flat route becomes open, if he widens with the flat receiver the stick sits down behind him for an easy pitch and catch. Key the middle linebacker or nickel defender depth in Cover 3, a shallow drop from this defender signals a jump on the stick route so be ready to climb to the nod or corner route instead. Man coverage with underneath help, such as Cover 1 robber, invites a user defender to lurk the stick route, so check for a defender sitting in the throwing window before committing to that read. Overload blitzes from the trips side can disrupt the stick timing, so recognize pre-snap edge pressure or a rotated safety cheating toward the trips side as a signal to get the ball out fast on the nod or flat.

Usage Tips

Use this play on third and short to third and medium since the stick route settles in soft zones at the sticks and gives an immediate throwing lane.

Check the flat defender and the underneath linebacker depth before the snap, if the linebacker sits shallow expect the stick window to close so prioritize the flat route or bail to the nod.

Hot route the flat defender into a shallow drag or the corner route into a deep out if you diagnose Cover 3 sky pre-snap, this adjusts the concept from a zone beater into a more direct man beater.

Pair this play with Curls or Four Verticals from the same set to keep the defense honest on shell recognition, since both stress similar zone landmarks but attack different levels of the field.

Against aggressive user blitzers, get the ball out on the quick stick or nod read within your first two progressions since the protection is designed for a fast rhythm throw rather than extended pockets.
