Breakdown

Four Verticals out of Trips Y-Flex sends four receivers vertically up the field to stress the deep half of the field, with the trips side releasing two seams and a corner-breaking route while the backside X runs a straight vertical up the numbers. The HB stays in to check release and chip before sneaking out to the flat as a safety valve against the blitz. This is a classic zone beater designed to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 by overloading the deep zones with more verticals than defenders can cover, though it also holds up against man coverage if you have a speed mismatch. Primary read progression starts with the seam route from the slot, works to the deep corner breaking route from the outside trips receiver, then to the backside vertical, using the HB check release as the last resort.

Defensive Reads

Watch the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop or blitz look opens up the seam route immediately for a big gain. Key the deep safeties before the snap, if they show two high and stay two high after the snap this play is live because Cover 2 corners cannot cover the seam and corner routes both. If the defense rotates to a single high shell such as Cover 3 or Cover 1, look immediately to the seam away from the deep middle defender. Beware of Cover 4 or Cover 6 shells with match principles, since four defenders can match the four verticals and take away every window, forcing you to the HB checkdown. User controlled defenders sitting in the deep middle or robbing the seam will jump this route combo hard, so bait them by looking off the seam before committing to the corner route on the outside trips receiver.

Usage Tips

Presnap identify whether the safeties are showing two high or rotating to single high, because this play is built to punish two high shells with the seam-corner combo on the trips side.

If you see Cover 3 with a deep middle safety, target the seams on either side of him since the corners are usually occupied by the outside verticals.

Hot route the HB to a wheel or deeper route if you diagnose man coverage, since the check release into the flat is only a checkdown against zone drops.

Pair this play with Curls or Stick from the same set to keep defenses honest on early downs, then hit them with Four Verticals once they start jumping shorter routes.

Best used on second or third and long, or as a shot play on first down when you want to test a defense playing soft zone shells.
