Stick out of Shotgun Trips Y-Flex is a quick-hitting spot concept designed to attack zone coverage with fast reads and rhythm timing. The backside single receiver runs an out breaking route while the trips side stacks a flat route, a stick route settling in the hook zone, and a vertical seam clear-out from the outside receiver, with the RB releasing to the flat area underneath. Primary progression starts with the stick sitting in the middle zone, works to the flat if a linebacker walls off the stick, then comes back to the backside out as the last resort against soft coverage.

Defensive Reads

Watch for a linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the hook zone pre snap since that shows zone coverage and tells you the stick route will be contested. If the flat defender jumps outside at the snap, that opens a throwing lane to the stick route sitting behind him in the void. Man coverage beaters here rely on the natural pick created by the stick and flat routes crossing paths, so look for a defender getting rerouted or picked at the snap. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties tend to leave the underneath flat and stick routes open since the corners sink into their deep quarters. Watch for a blitzing linebacker off the edge since the RB flat route can be used as a checkdown or hot route adjustment to beat the pressure before it arrives.

Usage Tips

Use this on third and short to third and medium since the stick sitting route creates an easy completion window against zone drops.

Pre snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties because that usually signals off man or zone coverage that lets the stick route settle for an easy pitch and catch.

If you see man coverage with a linebacker matched on the stick route, hot route the flat runner to a shallow drag or bump the seam clear-out into a quick slant to create instant separation.

Pair Stick with Four Verticals and PA WR In from this set so the seam runner threat forces defenders to respect vertical shots, opening up the stick and flat combo underneath.

Against Cover 3, throw the stick route immediately since it sits right in the hole between the underneath zone defenders before the flat defender can widen and rob the throw.
