Breakdown

Dagger PoCo lines up out of Shotgun Trips Y-Flex with three receivers stacked to one side and a single receiver isolated backside. The isolated X runs a post corner off the top, the trips side stacks a deep post from the slot with a shallow crossing route underneath, while the inside slot receiver runs a corner route breaking outside to occupy the flat defender. The backside single receiver runs a deep drag across the field, giving the quarterback a dump off option if the primary post corner and post/dig combo are covered. This is a classic man and zone beater built to attack Cover 2 and Cover 3 shells, with the primary read starting on the post corner route to the closed side before working to the dagger post underneath it.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he widens to the corner route immediately you have a soft window for the post corner over the top. Key the middle linebacker or hook defender, if he sinks with the shallow crosser instead of jumping the post it opens a throwing lane for the dagger concept underneath the safety. Man coverage on the trips side with no safety help over the top means the post corner should win one on one against a trailing corner. A single high safety who reads quarterback eyes and jumps the post corner route will shut this down fast, so be ready to work the deep drag or dagger post as your counter. Disguised zone blitzes that bring extra pressure off the edge can collapse the pocket before the post corner fully breaks, so account for user blitz threats coming off the weak side.

Usage Tips

Check pre-snap safety alignment before the snap, if you see two deep safeties split evenly you have Cover 2 or Cover 4 and the post corner is your first look against the corner biting on the flat. If you see a single high safety, expect Cover 3 or Man Free, and the deep post from the slot becomes the money route since it splits the zone between the corner and safety. Use the backside deep drag as a built in checkdown against heavy blitz looks or when the trips side gets jumped by underneath defenders sitting on the shallow crosser. Pair this play with Four Verticals or Go DBL Post from the same set to keep the defense honest on deep shell rotation, then come back to Dagger PoCo once you bait a safety into cheating up. Best called on second or third and medium to long when you need an explosive gain and have time in the pocket to let the post corner and dagger post fully develop.
