Breakdown

Hi Lo Dig is a trips-side dig concept run out of Shotgun Trips Y-Flex with 11 personnel. The X on the backside runs a deep comeback while the two trips receivers stack a corner route over top of the shallow drag underneath, and the Y-Flex tight end runs the namesake dig across the middle with the slot receiver working an out underneath to create the high low read on the flat defender or hook defender. This is a man beater at heart, using the dig to sit down in the void behind underneath coverage and in front of deep zones, with the primary read progression starting on the dig, moving to the underneath out or drag if the dig is taken away, and working back to the backside comeback if the pocket holds up long enough.

Defensive Reads

Identify the middle linebacker depth at the snap, since a shallow drop signals he intends to wall off the dig and you should progress to the underneath out Watch for a robber or lurk defender sitting in the passing lane between the hash marks, a common counter that jumps the dig route before it clears the formation Check if the corner over the backside X is playing outside leverage, which opens the comeback route as a late progression if the dig and out are covered Cover 2 and Cover 4 shells with two deep safeties tend to shut down the dig because there is a defender sitting over top ready to close the window quickly Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is where this play wins most often, since the dig only needs a half step of separation to be open

Usage Tips

Look for single high safety shells before the snap since the dig sits in the exact window that gets exposed against Cover 1 and Cover 3 hook defenders who bite on the underneath route

Hot route the backside X into a hitch or slant on third and short if you need a faster outlet instead of the deep comeback

Motion the flanker or use a shift to confirm man versus zone before the snap, since the dig will beat trailing man defenders but needs a clean throwing window against zone drops

Pair this play with Curls or Stick from the same set to keep the defense honest on shorter drops, then come back to Hi Lo Dig once linebackers start jumping the quicker routes

Best called on second and medium to third and long where the defense is more likely to sit in zone drops and give the tight end room to work the middle of the field
