The offensive line sets up a pass pocket look to sell the draw fake, then climbs to the second level to clear out linebackers as the back hits the A or B gap. This is purely a run play designed to punish aggressive pass rush defenses and blitz heavy fronts, with the primary read being the natural crease created between the guards depending on which linebacker flows first.

Watch for user controlled linebackers spying the backfield instead of dropping into zone, a disciplined mike who sits and reads kills this play immediately. Check safety depth pre snap, a two high shell that stays home in zone coverage can rally down quickly and limit the explosive gain. Look for nano blitzes or interior stunts, defenses that loop their tackles inside can actually create bigger cutback lanes for the runner. Man coverage with linebackers turned to cover backs out of the backfield leaves the box thin and vulnerable to this scheme.

Usage Tips

Call this play when the defense shows an obvious pass rush alignment such as wide nine ends or a heavy blitz package pre snap since the pass set fake sells hardest against aggressive fronts. Watch linebacker depth before the snap, if the mikes are creeping up expecting a blitz this draw hits before they can redirect downhill. Use this in second and long or third and medium counts to catch defenders in pass rush lanes and drop coverage that overpursues upfield.
