Inside Attack is a play action pass out of Shotgun Trips Y-Flex that layers a mesh style crossing concept underneath a deep shot. The backside X runs a corner or vertical release from the bunch alone, the Y-Flex TE runs a shallow drag across the formation while the inline slot works an out and up under it, and the Trips receiver on the play side runs a deep vertical stem past the mesh point, with the offensive line and HB selling run action up front. This is a man beater and zone beater combo play, primary read starts with the vertical shot on the play side seam, then works down to the crossing mesh underneath if the deep route is capped.
Defensive Reads
Read the single high safety before the snap, if he sits deep middle without rotating toward the trips side you can jump the vertical route with a user controlled defender. Watch for a lurking linebacker or nickel defender sitting in the mesh area, a disciplined zone defense will have someone spying the shallow crossers to blow up the underdneath option. Key the play side cornerback leverage, if he plays inside technique he is inviting the corner or vertical route to be taken away, so bail early and jump any comeback or out breaking route. Blitz packages that bring pressure off the edge can beat this play before the play action fake fully develops, so time your jump on the snap and get depth quickly if you see extra rushers. Cover 2 shells with safeties rotating late can be shut down by squeezing the flat defender and staying square to eliminate the underneath drag from breaking wide open.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment before the snap, if you see a single high safety shaded toward the trips side, take the shot on the vertical route immediately off the play action fake.
Use the mesh underneath against Cover 3 and Cover 2 shells since the crossing routes create natural rub traffic that beats zone drops and linebacker spacing.
If the defense shows man coverage with no safety help over the top, prioritize the vertical route since Inside Attack is built to punish man beater looks.
Pair this play with HB Off Tackle or Inside Zone earlier in a series so the play action fake actually holds linebackers, then call Inside Attack once the defense starts biting on run keys.
Best used on second and medium or third and short to medium since the play action fake needs a run threat to be believable, avoid calling this in obvious pass situations against disciplined defenses.
