Inside Attack out of Shotgun Trips Y-Flex is a quick game passing concept with a play action rollout tag built into the design. The backside X runs an out route to the boundary while the trips side stacks a mesh style concept: the Y runs a shallow dig underneath, the slot runs a quick out that sits at the sticks, and the outside trips receiver runs a slant that crosses the field, creating a levels look against zone drops. The HB releases up the seam on a wheel route on the strong side, giving you a vertical answer if the underneath defenders crash down on the mesh. Primary read starts with the slant/dig levels combo working from inside out, then bounces to the boundary out route if the underneath is jumped, with the HB wheel as your home run outlet against man coverage or blown assignments.

Defensive Reads

Identify the middle linebacker depth at the snap; if he sits shallow to jump the dig, the HB wheel or boundary out will be wide open behind him. Look for a lurk defender sitting in the shallow zone between the trips receivers, since that is the primary threat against the mesh and levels combo. Check if the defense rotates to a two high shell post snap, which signals Cover 2 or Cover 4 and tells you to trust the flood of routes flowing to the sticks rather than looking deep. Watch for man coverage matchups on the HB; if a linebacker or slower defender is tasked with covering the wheel route, that mismatch wins every time given enough protection. Respect blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the quick hitting slant and out routes are designed to get the ball out before pressure closes on the quarterback.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs or third and short since the quick hitting routes get the ball out fast and beat blitzes before they arrive.

Check the middle of the field pre-snap: if you see a single high safety, the dig and slant levels combo will pick apart Cover 3 zone drops.

If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the backside X out route into a quicker hitch to speed up your first read against Cover 2 corners sitting on the flat.

Watch the HB out of the backfield against man coverage; if a linebacker tries to cover him on the wheel, that is an automatic explosive play if you climb the pocket and let it develop.

Pair this play with Stick or Curls in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick game and intermediate zone beaters, then mix in Corner Strike or PA WR In once you have set up the underneath routes as tendencies.
