Read Option out of Shotgun Trips Y-Flex is a pure zone run play built around the mesh point between the QB and HB. The diagram shows the HB and QB crossing in the backfield with the read arrow pointing toward the playside gap, telling the QB to key the read defender (typically the playside end) before deciding to hand off or pull and keep. The offensive line executes a zone blocking scheme, sealing backside gaps while the QB reads the unblocked edge defender to determine whether to give or keep. Defensive Reads

Watch the playside defensive end or edge defender before the snap, since Read Option lives or dies on his leverage and reaction speed. Man coverage on the trips side with no extra run support usually means a favorable box count for the ballcarrier. Watch for a scraping linebacker or lurking user defender crashing down hard, since that is the primary counter to Read Option and can blow up both the give and keep options. Zone coverages that keep both safeties deep can leave the box light, making this play especially effective against split safety shells like 2 high shells that are passive against the run.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and only run this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box for a numbers advantage.

Identify whether the playside end is squeezing down or staying wide, since that dictates your give or pull decision at the mesh point.

Use the trips side receivers to occupy the defense presnap with a shift or motion, which can bait the defense into rotating coverage and thin out the box.

Pair this with HB Slip Screen and HB Mid Draw from the same set to keep defenders honest on the interior and prevent linebackers from crashing the mesh point every snap.

Best called on early downs or short yardage situations where defenses expect pass concepts out of a trips look, since it exploits aggressive run fits.
