Strong Flood X-Cross out of Shotgun Trips Y-Flex floods the strong side with three route depths while the backside X runs a deep crosser into the vacated area. From the trips side, the inside slot runs a corner route up the seam, the middle receiver sits down as a flat/hook read, and the outside receiver runs a shallow drag into the flat. On the backside, X releases outside then breaks across the field on a deep crossing route that stretches zone defenders horizontally. This is a classic Cover 3 beater built off a vertical and horizontal flood combo, with the primary read progression going corner route first, then working down to the flat, and finally back to the backside crosser if the flood side is capped.

Defensive Reads

Man coverage killers use this play to isolate the backside crosser against a trailing defender, especially against Cover 1 or Cover 0 looks where there is no deep zone help over the middle. Zone defenses that play Cover 3 with a hard flat defender are vulnerable because the corner route sits behind the flat and in front of the deep third, creating a natural window. Watch for a user-controlled linebacker or safety sitting in a shallow lurk zone, since that defender can jump the flat or drag route and blow up the underneath progression. If the defense shows Cover 4 or Cover 2 with two deep safeties, the corner route will be capped and the crosser becomes the primary answer since it stretches the middle linebacker horizontally. Beware of Cover 3 buzz or a robber safety who can sit underneath the corner route while a deep third defender still covers vertically, since that combination takes away both the corner and the layered crosser.

Usage Tips

Use this play on early downs or second and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4.

Pre-snap, identify the safety alignment: if you see a single high safety with corners playing off, expect Cover 3 and the corner route should be open behind the flat defender.

If the defense shows two high safeties, hot route the corner runner to a deep out or bench the play and check to Four Verticals or Dagger PoCo from the same set to attack the middle of the field instead.

Work your primary read to the corner route first, but if a linebacker sinks deep to rob it, come back down to the flat or drag underneath since flood concepts are designed to layer that low to high stress.
