PA WR In runs off a play-action fake to hold the linebackers, releasing three routes into the boundary. From the trips side, the outside receiver runs a deep corner route to stretch the safety vertically, the middle slot receiver runs a deep out breaking to the sideline, and the inside slot runs a short in route settling underneath as an outlet. On the backside, the isolated X receiver runs a deep in route across the field, crossing behind the underneath trips routes. This is a play-action man beater designed to create natural picks and separation against man coverage, with the primary read starting on the backside deep in route since the single receiver alignment often forces man coverage, then progressing to the trips side out and corner combo if the backside window is late developing.
Watch the middle linebacker and weakside linebacker at the snap, if they bite hard on the run fake it opens a clean throwing lane for the backside deep in route. Identify man coverage by checking if the corner on the single receiver side is playing tight outside shade with no safety help underneath, this is the ideal look for the crosser to win. Against zone coverage, key the flat defender and deep third defender on the trips side, if they widen too far with the corner route the underneath out route will sit open in the seam. Beware of a user lurking in the middle of the field or a delayed blitz off the edge, since the deep in route crosses through the natural landing spot for a rat linebacker or spy. Man coverage with press corners and no safety help is where this play thrives, while Cover 2 or Cover 4 with disciplined zone drops and a rover underneath can take away both the crosser and the trips out route.
Check pre-snap for single high safety or two high shell before the snap since the backside deep in route works best against man coverage with a safety cheating over the top. If the defense shows Cover 3 or Cover 4 with deep zone drops, look to the trips side out route as your zone beater since it sits in the void between the flat defender and deep zone defender. Use the play-action fake fully by holding the play fake animation to freeze linebackers before hitting the crossing in route, this is critical on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage. Hot route the inside slot receiver into a deeper option if you see the underneath defenders sitting shallow, giving you a leverage advantage on the crosser. Pair this play with Four Verticals or Dagger PoCo from the same set to keep the defense guessing between vertical shots and the intermediate crossing concept, then sequence into HB Mid Draw or Inside Zone once the defense starts jumping the play-action fakes.
