Double Post is a Shotgun 11 personnel dropback pass out of the Doubles Y Off WK set that sends both outside receivers vertically before breaking hard to the inside on post routes, stacking two deep-crossing threats that attack the middle of the field. The route combo is designed as a Cover 2 beater and Cover 4 beater, splitting the safeties by forcing them to choose which post to cover while the underneath routes hold linebackers and clear space. Primary read progression starts with the post route to the side that gets the single-high or split safety look first, then works to the backside post if the coverage rotates away, with any checkdown or flat option serving as the final bailout if both posts are covered.
Watch the safeties at the snap, if they bail to depth and stay split it is likely Cover 2 or Cover 4 and the post routes should find the seam between them. Key the flat defenders and underneath linebackers, if they widen with the outside stems it opens a throwing lane for the post to sit down in the honey hole. Beware of a robber or lurking safety sitting in the middle of the field, this is the primary defender who can jump both post routes and turn this into a pick six against Cover 4 match concepts. Check for Cover 3 buzz or single high rotation post snap, this collapses the passing lanes and forces the quarterback into a low percentage throw unless a receiver wins outside leverage early. Recognize blitz packages that bring extra rushers off the edge, since the deep post routes take time to develop this play is vulnerable to nano blitzes and user rushers if protection is not adjusted or a hot route is not called.
Use this play on second or third and medium to long when defenses are more likely to sit in Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells rather than blitz heavy man coverage.
Identify the safety alignment pre-snap, two deep safeties with soft corners is your green light since the post routes will split the seams before the safeties can converge.
If you see single high Cover 3 or man coverage with no safety help over the top, consider audibling to Slants or Double Slants instead since the posts will be more contested against a robbed middle of the field.
Hot route the backside post into a deep out or corner if you diagnose Cover 2 late, this keeps the flat defender from sitting on the underneath break and opens an easy pitch and catch.
