Curl Flat out of Doubles Y Off WK is a classic zone beater built on the curl flat combo to one side, with the backside working a complementary route to stress the entire width of the field. The routes stack a curl breaking back to the quarterback at the sticks with a flat route underneath it, creating a natural high low read on flat defenders and hook zone linebackers. This is a passing concept, not play-action or an RPO, so the QB is reading zone leverage first with the curl flat side as the primary progression and the backside as a hot alert vs man coverage.
Identify the flat defender before the snap since he determines whether you throw underneath or hold for the curl. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, a shallow drop from the hook defender signals Cover 3 and opens the curl window over the flat route. If the cornerback presses at the line with no deep safety help over the top, expect man coverage and lean toward the backside hot route or a hard out cut on the curl stem. User controlled defenders sitting in the curl window will jump the route, so hold the ball an extra beat and look to the flat or check down if you see a defender flashing into that zone. Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties tend to shut down the curl since the flat defender can sink under it while the safety caps the top, so prioritize the flat throw or move to the backside route in that shell.
Use this on third and short to third and medium since the curl sits right at the sticks and gives you a built-in conversion window.
Check the flat defender pre-snap. If a linebacker or slot corner is sitting low with no immediate threat to the flat, throw the flat route quickly for an easy conversion before the curl even breaks.
Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, work the high low on the curl flat side, letting the flat route pull the underneath defender before hitting the curl behind him.
If you see man coverage pre-snap, hot route the backside receiver into a quick out or slant to punish the leverage instead of forcing the curl flat read.
Pair this play with Slants or Double Slants in the same set to keep the defense guessing between quick horizontal stress and the curl flat vertical hold, then mix in RPO Glance Slant to make linebackers hesitate on run fits before you come back to this dropback concept.
