PA Read is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off WK that uses run fakes to freeze the second and third level defenders before attacking downfield. The concept typically features a deep shot route paired with an intermediate crossing or dig route, giving you a vertical shot on man coverage and a settle-down option against zone drops. Your primary read starts with the deep shot to see if the defense bites on the run fake and gives up a big play, then progresses to the intermediate breaking route underneath if the safety stays deep.
Identify single high safety shells pre-snap since PA Read is designed to punish Cover 3 and Cover 1 defenses that bite on the run action. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they step up hard on the fake, the window behind them opens for the intermediate route. Beware of Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with safeties staying deep, since the deep shot route will be well covered and you should progress immediately to the underneath option. Key on user controlled defenders dropping into a lurk or spy position near the intermediate route, as this is the primary defender who can jump your second read. Recognize disguised blitzes with linebackers crashing off the edge, since the play-action fake can hold your blockers long enough to get beat if you do not account for extra rushers.
Use this on early downs like first or second and short to mid distance so the run fake actually sells to the linebackers and safeties.
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, be ready to work the underneath breaking route instead of forcing the deep shot into coverage.
Hot route your check release back into a flat or drag route if you anticipate a blitz, giving yourself a quick outlet against pressure.
Pair this play in sequence with Mtn Inside Zone Split or Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so the defense respects the run fake and bites harder on the PA Read boot action.
Against aggressive user blitzers, throw with anticipation on the play-action fake since the pocket can collapse quickly if the offensive line loses the edge.
