Inside Zone Split is a run play out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off WK that uses a split zone blocking scheme, with the offensive line flowing laterally to one side while the TE or fullback cuts across the formation to kick out the backside edge defender. This gives the HB a true zone read look with a cutback lane if the backside is sealed. The primary read progression starts with the playside double team at the point of attack, then works to the backside cut block, so the ball carrier decides between banging it through the initial hole, bending it to the playside bounce, or cutting it back against backside pursuit.
Watch for a stacked box with linebackers creeping to the line pre-snap, this signals a run blitz that can beat the play before the zone flow develops Identify if the defense is running a 4-3 under or over front, since shaded nose tackles can blow up the playside double team and force an early cutback Key the backside defensive end and outside linebacker, if they stay home instead of chasing zone flow the split kick block will not have room to work Look for user-controlled defenders spying the QB or crashing the mesh point, this eliminates the cutback lane and forces the HB into predetermined gaps Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is the green light to trust the initial playside hole rather than banging it outside
Run this early in drives to establish tendencies before you dial up RPO Glance Slant or RPO Peek Slant off the same personnel and formation look
Check the box count before the snap, if the defense has six or more in the box consider audibling to a pass concept like Slants or Double Slants instead
Use the left or right trigger to manually select your blocking scheme aim point if you see the defense shading heavily to one side
This play hits hardest on early downs, especially 1st and 10 or 2nd and short, when defenses are more likely to play base fronts instead of nickel or dime packages
Pair this with HB Draw and Mtn Inside Zone Split in your call sheet to keep linebackers guessing on tempo and gap responsibility, then hit them with Y Lead Read Option when they start crashing down too hard
