Breakdown

RPO Glance Slant is a run pass option out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off WK that pairs an inside zone run with a glance slant from the backside slot and a hard slant from the frontside receiver. The offensive line executes zone blocking while the quarterback reads the play side linebacker or nickel defender to decide between handing off, throwing the quick glance, or hitting the slant against a hard box. This is a true dual threat RPO that beats both man and zone coverage depending on which defender the quarterback keys, with the primary read progressing from the box count pre-snap to the flow of the second level defender at the snap.

Defensive Reads

Watch the play side linebacker at the snap since his run fit or shuffle toward the slant window tells you whether to pull or hand the ball off. Man coverage with a linebacker in man on the slot receiver is a green light to throw the glance quickly before he can undercut the route. Zone coverage with a flat defender sinking underneath the slant can bait a bad throw, so read the flat defender's depth before committing. Nickel or slot blitzes off the edge shut down the run element quickly, forcing an immediate glance throw before the pocket collapses. Two high safety shells with disciplined linebackers staying home in their run fit take away both the run and the quick throw, so be ready to check to the run outside the RPO read.

Usage Tips

Check the box count before the snap and if the defense has six or more in the box, key the run fit and prepare to throw instead of handing off.

Identify single high versus two high safety shells pre-snap because single high often signals man coverage underneath, which opens the slant window against a trailing corner.

Use the glance slant as your answer to inside blitzes since the ball comes out fast and beats overaggressive linebackers crashing downhill.

Hot route the backside receiver into a speed out if you are seeing consistent robber coverage sitting on the glance window.

Sequence this with Slants and Double Slants earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on quick game, then let RPO Glance Slant punish overpursuit with the run element.
