Y Lead Read Option is a run-based read option out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off WK, built around a lead blocker into the B or C gap while the quarterback reads the backside defensive end to decide between the give and the keep. The Y (tight end) works as the lead blocker on this design, sealing the alley defender so the running back can press downhill, while the quarterback's option element forces the edge defender to declare before the ball is snapped for real. This is a run play with an RPO-style decision element, not a pure dropback pass, and the primary read progression is the unblocked edge defender first, then the running lane the lead blocker creates.
Watch the backside defensive end pre-snap and at the snap, since his crash or contain decision determines whether the give or the keep hits. Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 over or under front, since gap discipline from the defensive line directly affects whether the lead blocker can seal the alley. Look for linebacker depth and flow, because linebackers who overpursue the mesh point create the cutback lane for the running back on the give. Man beater elements show up if a linebacker bites on the play fake, opening space underneath, but scrape exchange defenses that swap the end and linebacker responsibilities can shut down both options. Watch for a defender spying the quarterback specifically on the read side, since disciplined spy technique removes the keep as a viable option and forces you into the handoff every time.
Check the box count before the snap by counting defenders in the tackle box versus your blockers, since this play needs a numbers advantage to hit consistently.
Attack bases and 4-3 fronts where the backside end is aggressive up the field, since that defender is your read key and easier to option off of when he crashes hard.
Use the QB keep against teams that consistently crash the edge defender inside, since that opens up a wide running lane for the quarterback with the lead blocker still working ahead of him.
Pair this with Mtn Inside Zone Split and Counter Y in your play-calling sequence so the defense cannot sit on one run look, forcing linebackers to respect multiple gap schemes from the same formation.
Save this for run-friendly downs like first and ten or second and short, and mix in RPO Glance Slant or RPO Peek Slant from the same set to punish defenders who key run too fast.
