This is a play-action man and zone beater, with the primary read being the Y pop route in the middle, working to the backside dig or crosser if the underneath window is taken away by a robber or Tampa 2 defender.
Identify the middle linebacker or nickel defender responsible for reading the run fake, if he steps up hard on the play fake, the Y pop route should come open behind him. Watch for a deep middle robber or Tampa 2 safety sitting in the same window as the pop route, since this coverage shell is the primary defense that shuts down the read and forces a check to the backside route. Key the strong safety and weak safety depth pre-snap, two high shells with soft zone drops give the pop route the most room to operate, while single high shells with press man on the outside receivers tell you the underneath defenders will be more physical and quicker to react to play action. Diagnose blitz packages by watching the slot or nickel defender crash hard off the edge or through an A gap immediately at the snap, since a delayed pop route release can get hung up against a well timed blitz and force an early checkdown. Look for user controlled defenders spying the tight end or sitting the pop route window, since a smart human opponent will often abandon a zone assignment to jump the primary read, so keying that lurk defender's positioning is critical before releasing the throw.
Run this on early downs (first or second and short to medium) so the play action freeze is believable to the defense and linebackers respect the run fake. Check the safety alignment before the snap: if you see two high safeties sitting deep, expect the Y pop to have a clean throwing window in the intermediate middle since there is likely no true robber. If the defense shows a single high safety with linebackers stacked tight, be ready for a blitz and consider hot routing the Y pop to sit shorter as a checkdown against pressure.
