Breakdown

Slants out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off WK is a quick-hitting man beater built around a trio of slant routes designed to attack off coverage and beat aggressive man defenders with immediate separation. The concept floods the underneath zones and creates natural rub action between the receivers, forcing defenders to fight through traffic while the quarterback works a quick, timing-based read. The primary progression starts with the fastest winning slant based on the corner's leverage (usually the boundary or WK-side receiver), then works to the backside slant, with the TE or check-down option serving as the answer versus a hard squeeze or blitz look.

Defensive Reads

Read the flow of the linebackers immediately after the snap, if they widen or bite on the slants it confirms man or aggressive zone underneath, which is exactly what this concept is built to exploit. Watch for a user-controlled defender sitting in a shallow lurk or spy technique, since that player can jump the inside slant and turn it into a turnover if the quarterback stares it down. Cover 3 and Cover 1 with aggressive underneath linebackers are the most vulnerable shells, the slants get in and out of their zones or beat man leverage before the defender can recover. Cover 2 with hard corner press or Cover 4 match zones that sink hard on inside breaking routes can shut this down, since the underneath defenders have easier eyes on the quick breaks. Watch for a disguised blitz off the edge or an interior nano blitz, since the quick timing of the slants is actually a natural answer to pressure if the ball comes out immediately to the first open window.

Usage Tips

Get the ball out on time since this is a rhythm concept, not a play where you should wait for routes to fully develop.

Check corner alignment before the snap, if you see off man or soft zone with cushion, this play wins immediately on the slant that has the most grass in front of it.

Use the slant away from any pre-snap safety rotation, since that is typically where the defense is weakest against the crossing action.

Pair this with RPO Glance Slant and RPO Peek Slant to keep the defense guessing between a true pass rep and a run-pass conflict look out of the same personnel and formation shell.

Best called on second or third and short to medium, where the quick separation from the slants punishes zone defenders sitting on the sticks and man defenders playing tight technique.

Combine with Double Post or X Dagger later in a series once you have shown Slants a few times, since defenders start jumping the underneath routes and open themselves up to double moves.
