Breakdown

Counter Y is a gap scheme run play out of Shotgun with 11 personnel that pulls the backside guard (and sometimes fullback or TE depending on animation) to lead through the hole for the HB, creating misdirection with a slight hesitation step before the running back attacks the counter path. This is a run play, not a pass concept, and it is designed to punish overpursuing linebackers and aggressive edge defenders who bite on the initial flow read. The primary read progression for the ball carrier is to press the frontside gap to sell the flow, then plant and follow the pulling blocker through the counter lane, reading the kickout block on the edge defender before deciding whether to bend it back inside or bounce it outside.

Defensive Reads

Watch for linebacker depth at the snap, since linebackers sitting shallow and reading run gaps quickly can beat the pulling blocker to the hole and blow up Counter Y before it develops. Check safety alignment pre-snap, because a single high safety indicates a lighter box and a green light to run Counter Y, while two safeties deep can mean an extra run defender is disguised near the line. Key the play side defensive end and outside linebacker, since a hard crash or aggressive edge rush sets up the natural cutback lane this play is designed to exploit. Beware of user-controlled defenders spying the backfield or shooting the play side gap immediately, as this is the primary counter to Counter Y and can blow it up for a loss if the guard cannot get to his landmark in time. Look for stacked fronts or run blitzes with extra defenders crashing downhill pre-snap, since these alignments clog the counter lane and force you to bail into a check release or audible to a pass concept.

Usage Tips

Use pre-snap to check the box count and confirm you have a numbers advantage before committing to Counter Y, since this play loses value against heavy run blitzes with extra defenders stacked in the box.

Identify whether the defense is showing man or zone via safety depth, since Counter Y works best against teams playing base zone fronts that flow hard to initial motion or shifts.

Mix Counter Y with Mtn Inside Zone Split and Inside Zone Split from the same set to keep linebackers guessing between zone flow and gap misdirection, which sets up bigger cutback lanes later in a drive.

Use Counter Y on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) to stay ahead of the sticks and avoid predictable long yardage passing situations.

If the CPU or opposing user shows a hard edge crash from the defensive end, manually control the HB and press the hole longer to let the pulling blocker clear the alley before making your cut.
