RPO Alert Bubble is a run-pass option built off an inside zone run scheme with a bubble screen alert to the slot receiver. The quarterback reads the alert defender, typically the flat defender or nearest linebacker to the bubble side, and either hands off the zone run or pulls it to fire the quick bubble screen. This is a numbers-based RPO, not strictly a man or zone beater, since it attacks whichever defender crashes down on the run fit versus sits in coverage to take away the screen.
Watch the slot corner or nickel defender over the bubble receiver before the snap, if they are aligned soft with outside leverage they are likely the alert key for the bubble throw. Check linebacker depth, if the linebackers are stacked tight to the box showing run blitz or a nano blitz look, expect the quarterback to pull and throw the bubble quickly. Zone coverages like Cover 3 or Cover 4 that keep the flat defender deep tend to open up the run since the alert defender will not crash down. Man coverage with press corners and blitzing linebackers can shut down the bubble but often leaves the zone run lanes wide open since fewer defenders stay in the box. User-controlled defenders who spy the bubble receiver or jump the screen route in coverage will bait the quarterback into the run instead, so watch for a user flying out to the flat right at the snap.
Presnap, count defenders in the box and identify the flat or alert defender on the bubble side before the snap. If the defense shows six or more in the box with the slot corner or safety sitting deep, pull the ball and throw the bubble immediately for a numbers advantage. If the box is light and the alert defender widens out with the bubble receiver, hand the ball off and trust the zone blocking up front. Use this in early down-and-distance situations, especially first and second down, to stay ahead of the sticks and keep the defense honest against both run and pass. Pair this with Inside Zone Split and Mtn Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so the defense commits to the run fit, then come back to RPO Alert Bubble to punish overaggressive linebackers flowing downhill. Sequence it with RPO Glance Slant or RPO Peek Slant from the same set to keep defenders guessing on which alert route the quarterback will trust.
