0 1 Trap out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off WK is a gap scheme run play that uses a trap block up front to create a designed cutback lane for the HB. The fullback or trapping lineman pulls across the formation to kick out the first threat off the edge, letting the interior linemen wash defenders down and open a crease between the guard and center. This is not a man or zone beater since it is a pure run concept, and the primary read is the trap defender: if he crashes hard inside, cut it outside off the kick block, if he stays wide, hit it up through the trap hole immediately.
Identify the front alignment pre-snap, this play struggles against odd fronts with a nose tackle sitting directly over the center since it clogs the trap lane before it develops. Watch the play side defensive end or 3-technique, if he is disciplined and reads the trap block instead of crashing upfield he can blow up the entire concept. Key the middle linebacker depth, a linebacker sitting shallow in the box will diagnose the trap quickly and fill the cutback lane, while a deeper linebacker gives the HB more room to work. Look for defenses that send a linebacker on a run blitz through the trap gap, this is the biggest counter since it beats the scheme before the pulling blocker arrives. Man and Cover 1 looks with an extra run defender in the box (like a robber safety creeping down) shut this play down fast, so check safety depth before the snap and be ready to check to a pass concept if the numbers do not favor the run.
Run 0 1 Trap on early downs (1st and 10 or 2nd and short) when the defense shows a light box with only 6 or fewer defenders in the run fit. Check the defensive tackle alignment pre-snap, if he is shaded outside the guard the trap block becomes easier to execute and the cutback lane widens. Use motion or a quick pre-snap look to bait linebackers into flowing hard one direction so the trap can exploit their overcommitment. Pair this with Inside Zone Split and Mtn Inside Zone Split earlier in a drive so defenders start keying zone steps, then hit them with 0 1 Trap to punish downhill linebacker aggression. Against defenses that stack the box or send a nano blitz off the edge, bail out to RPO Glance Post or RPO Peek Slant from this same set to keep the offense on schedule.
