Mtn Lead Swing Spot is a play-action oriented pass concept built out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off WK that pairs a spot route combo to one side with a swing route out of the backfield as the underneath outlet. The mountain (Mtn) shift motions the backfield alignment presnap to give the offense a lead blocker feel and manipulate linebacker flow before the throw. This is primarily a zone beater, using the spot concept (hitch, corner, flat) to sit defenders down in soft zones while the swing route attacks the perimeter if the defense sucks in on the shorter routes. The primary read progression starts with the spot concept to the trips or twin side, then works down to the swing route as the checkdown against a hard closing underneath zone or blitz look.
Presnap, check safety depth and width since a two high shell invites the spot concept while a single high safety usually signals Cover 3 or man coverage underneath. Watch the linebacker reaction to the mountain shift, if they flow hard with the motion it usually confirms man coverage and you should target the swing route immediately. Post snap, key the underneath zone defenders in Cover 3 or Cover 4, if they sink too deep on the spot route the swing route to the flat becomes wide open for an easy checkdown. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 2 Man or Cover 4 Press since the corner can jump the flat and the swing route gets no room to work against tight man coverage. Watch for a user controlled linebacker spying the backfield, since a smart defender will sit on the swing route and jump the throw if they read the play action fake late.
Use the presnap motion to identify if the defense is playing man or zone based on whether a defender follows the motion man across the formation.
This play works best on early downs or second and medium when defenses are more likely to sit in base zone shells like Cover 3 or Cover 4.
If you see a two high safety shell presnap, prioritize the spot route sitting in the hole between the flat and curl zones since Cover 2 corners will jump the flat.
Hot route the swing back into a flat route if you diagnose man coverage presnap since the swing naturally loses ground against man defenders lined up tight.
Sequence this play after running Mtn HB Swing or Mtn Inside Zone Split so linebackers respect the run action and bite on the mountain shift, opening up the spot window over the middle.
