Breakdown

Orbit Inside Zone Split is an inside zone run built out of Shotgun Doubles Y Off WK, using an orbit motion from the backfield to shift the defense's leverage before the snap. The offensive line executes a standard inside zone blocking scheme, working double teams at the point of attack and climbing to the second level, while the motion man can also carry misdirection or serve as an extra blocker to the play side. This is a run play designed to attack light boxes and gap fills, with the primary read being the frontside double team combo (playside guard and center or guard and tackle) into the first color linebacker showing downhill fill, then bouncing to the backside cutback lane if the play side is clogged.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, check safety depth and box count, an eight man box with both safeties down signals a run blitz look that can beat this scheme before the snap. Watch linebacker reaction to the orbit motion, if defenders flow hard with the motion man it opens a natural cutback lane on the backside. Identify user-controlled defenders sitting in the A or B gap, aggressive user blitzers can be gashed if the offensive line seals the double team quickly. Zone coverage shells with linebackers sitting in shallow zone drops tend to overcommit to run fits, so patience on the cutback beats these looks. Man coverage with a spy or a linebacker keying the mesh point can shut this down, so avoid this play against known gap control defenses that keep linebackers square and disciplined.

Usage Tips

Use orbit motion pre-snap to bait linebackers into flowing with the motion man and expose numbers in the box before the snap.

Check the defensive front pre-snap, this run hits best against even fronts and light six or seven man boxes rather than stacked eight man fronts.

Pair this with RPO Glance Slant or RPO Peek Slant from the same set so the defense has to respect run and pass off identical formation and motion looks.

On early downs like first and ten or second and short, call this to stay ahead of the sticks and set up play action shots later such as Orbit PA Shot from the same personnel.

If the user controls a linebacker and steps up hard on the motion, be ready to bounce the run outside since the interior fill created a natural cutback lane.

Combine with HB Draw or Mtn HB Swing in the same set to keep defenders honest against both gap run and check down concepts.
