Defensive Reads

Watch the play side DE or OLB alignment pre-snap, if he is crashing hard down the line on tape he is likely to be the read key that gets exploited by the QB keep. Check safety depth before the snap, a single high safety often means the defense is loading the box and susceptible to the QB pulling it outside the read defender. Post-snap, key the linebacker flow, if the second level linebackers overpursue to the RB dive path, the QB keeper lane opens up immediately behind the read defender. Man coverage on the perimeter with no extra run support in the box is where this play thrives, since it does not need receivers to win, it just needs numbers at the point of attack. This play struggles against disciplined scrape exchange defense where the read defender stays home and a linebacker replaces him outside, so mix in Tear QB Zone or Bounce Outside Zone if you see that discipline on tape.

Usage Tips

Use this on early downs (1st and 2nd, or 3rd and short) when you want to establish tempo and force the defense to respect both the QB run and the RB dive.

Identify the read defender pre-snap, usually the DE or OLB aligned over the tackle to the play side, and watch his first step after the snap rather than guessing.

If the defense shows a heavy box with 8 or more in the tackle box, consider audibling to Tear Speed Option or Tear Shovel Option from the same set to keep the numbers advantage.

Pair this with RPO Read Snag or RPO Read Y Flat on the following play call to punish defenses that start selling hard on the run fit after seeing Lead Read Option once.

Against aggressive user defenders who jump the QB run lane, trust the give to the RB since the play design is built to make the defense wrong no matter which way they flow.
