RPO Read Snag is a run pass option out of Shotgun Deuce with 12 personnel that gives the quarterback a pre-snap and post-snap decision between handing off inside zone or pulling to throw the snag concept. The snag combo pairs a corner route, a quick hitch to the flat, and an underneath spot route, giving the offense both a man beater with the corner route/flat combo and a zone beater against sinking linebackers who bite on the run fake. The primary read progression starts with the play side inside linebacker or overhang defender: if he steps up on the run flow, pull and work the snag route to the flat first, then the corner route as your window opens against off coverage.
Identify pre-snap whether the strong safety is rotated down into the box, since a light box confirms the run read and you should crash the alley to stop inside zone. Watch the flat defender at the snap, if he sinks with the corner route instead of jumping the snag route underneath you have a clean throwing window for the quick game. Key the play side linebacker's first step, if he flows hard downhill on run action that confirms the pass side of the RPO is live and the quarterback should be pulling. Against man coverage, user the underneath defender onto the snag route since that is the shallowest and quickest developing throw the quarterback will target first. This play struggles against a two high shell with disciplined linebackers who stay square and read the mesh point, since that combination removes both the run lane and the passing window simultaneously.
Check the box count before the snap and if the defense is outnumbered in the box, take the run automatically without even reading the RPO key. Use this play on second and short to medium yardage situations where defenses are more likely to sell out against the run and open up the pass window. Motion the backside tight end into a stack or bunch look to force zone defenders to declare early and clarify whether you are seeing man or zone coverage. Pair this call with Tear Speed Option or Tear QB Zone earlier in the sequence so the defense keys run action and the snag concept off the same formation catches linebackers cheating downhill. Hot route the flat runner to a shallow drag if you see a hard corner blitz, since that gives the quarterback a faster outlet than waiting on the corner route to develop.
