PA Y Leak is a play-action shot play out of Shotgun Deuce that sells the run fake before releasing the Y (tight end) on a deep leak route up the seam, shown here climbing vertically from the backfield area behind the line. Both outside receivers run deep clearing routes to the corners on opposite sidelines, stretching the defense horizontally while the leak route works the vacated middle of the field. The line shows a run blocking scheme to sell inside zone or gap action, making this a classic play-action beater against aggressive run defense and single high zone shells, with the Y leak as the clear primary read and the two outside verticals as the deep alert options if the leak gets picked up.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap identify if the defense is showing single high man or cover 3, since the leak route exploits the seam vacated by an aggressive run blitz or overplayed linebackers. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they crash hard on the run fake, the middle of the field opens for the Y leak to work uncontested. Key the deep safety rotation post-snap, if he stays flat footed reading run action, the leak has a clean angle to split the coverage. Beware cover 2 or cover 4 shells with disciplined linebackers who sit and read, since they can undercut the leak route or get a user controlled defender to jump the throwing lane. Man coverage with a linebacker matched on the tight end is the most exploitable look, since the leak's angle and speed create natural separation against slower defenders.
Usage Tips
Run this on early downs like first or second and short to medium yardage so the run fake actually holds linebackers and safeties. Look for a single high safety or run blitz alignment pre-snap since aggressive box defenders sell out on the fake and open up the leak lane. Hot route the backside outside receiver into a shorter option route if you are facing zone heavy defenses that sit on the deep verticals. Pair this with Inside Zone or Inside Zone Split earlier in a series so the defense keys run action and bites harder on the play-action fake here. Use PA Y Leak as a changeup after running Counter Y or Lead Read Option a few times to punish linebackers who are flowing hard downhill.
