Breakdown

Double Go out of Shotgun Deuce sends both outside receivers on vertical routes straight up the field to attack the deep boundary and deep numbers, while the two inline tight ends release from a bunched look and break outward on quick out routes to clear the underneath area. The running back stays in to help protect, giving the quarterback a clean pocket to climb into as he reads the field. This is a pure man beater designed to isolate cornerbacks on an island deep, with the primary read progression going outside in: check the boundary Go route first, then the field side Go route, and use the two out routes underneath only as a checkdown if both corners get depth and take away the deep shots.

Defensive Reads

Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two deep safeties or a single high safety, two high shells cap the Go routes and force the quarterback to check down to the tight end outs. Watch cornerback alignment at the snap, corners playing off man or bail technique take away the deep shot and make this play low value unless the tight ends can win underneath. Post-snap, look for a user controlled safety rotating over the top on either vertical route, that lurk threat is the biggest counter to this concept and often baits a bad deep throw. Man coverage without safety help is the ideal matchup, if you see man alignment on both outside receivers with no deep safety rotation, this play is designed to win. Zone blitz packages or Cover 3 buzz looks with a fast underneath defender can jump the tight end out routes, so recognize linebacker depth and blitz timing to decide if the vertical shot is still on.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at both corners before the snap, if either one is playing tight man with no safety help over the top you have a live shot to that side of the field.

Use the out routes from the tight ends as a built in answer against zone drops or if the pass rush closes the pocket quickly, they settle underneath and give you a safe completion.

This play is best called on second or third and long when you need to stretch the field vertically and force the defense to respect explosive plays.

Pair this with Corner Go's Flat or Mesh Spot in your play-calling sequence, if the defense adjusts to stop the double vertical shot you can attack the same coverage with quicker underneath concepts.

Against single high looks, hold the ball a beat longer to let the vertical routes work past the safety, against two high shells look to the tight end out routes sooner since deep shots will be capped.
