Tear Mesh Post is a man beater built out of the Shotgun Deuce 12 personnel look, combining a classic mesh concept underneath with a post shot on the backside to stress zone defenders vertically. The two shallow crossers create natural traffic to rub off man defenders while the post route stretches the deep middle behind any linebacker or safety who bites on the mesh action. The primary read progression starts with the post shot at the snap to check for a blown coverage or single high look, then works down to the mesh crossers underneath if the post is not open, using the shallow route as the checkdown against tight man coverage.
Identify single high safety pre-snap, this is the green light to trust the post shot without progressing through the mesh first. Watch linebacker depth at the snap, if they sink hard into shallow zones the mesh crossers will be sat on and you should be ready to reset to the post or check down. Key any user-controlled defender flying downhill toward the mesh, aggressive user lurk players will jump the shallow crossers leaving the post route in soft coverage behind them. Recognize Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells with defenders sinking to deep thirds or quarters, this squeezes the post window and forces you to live underneath with the mesh combo. Watch for man coverage defenders getting picked in the mesh traffic, a natural indicator that this play is winning and you should trust the underneath completion quickly before the pocket collapses.
Take your pre-snap shot at the post route by checking the deep safety alignment, if you see one high safety shaded away from the post side you can throw it immediately off the snap for an explosive play.
Against man coverage let the mesh crossers work through the traffic naturally, defenders trailing in man will get picked or slowed by the rub which opens a easy completion underneath.
If the defense shows two high shells or Cover 2, abandon the post read early and work the mesh combination since the post window will be tighter with two safeties over the top.
Pair this play with Tear Speed Option or Tear QB Zone in your play sequencing so defenses have to respect the run action out of the same formation, this slows down linebacker flow to the mesh and opens bigger throwing lanes.
Use this on second and medium or third and short to medium situations where defenses are more likely to sit in man coverage, since the mesh concept is one of the better answers to man beaters in the set.
