Bounce Outside Zone from Shotgun Deuce is a zone run play with the running back aligned to the offset side of the backfield, showing a lateral zone-blocking scheme designed to let the offensive line flow horizontally and create a bounce lane to the perimeter. The RB path shows a slight jab step before bending outside, reading the flow of the offensive line to bounce the run outside if the interior gets clogged. This is a zone beater run play, best against light boxes, and the primary read progression is playside cutback lane first, then bounce outside if the edge defender gets sealed or washed down by the tackle and TE.
Defensive Reads
Watch the linebacker depth pre-snap, if they are stacked tight behind the line they are keying run and will flow hard, so plan to cut back against overpursuit. Identify the edge defender's alignment, a wide alignment with outside leverage takes away the bounce lane and forces the RB back inside. Post-snap, key the playside linebacker's first step, if he attacks downhill immediately the cutback lane opens behind him. User the playside DE or edge defender manually to hold the point of attack and prevent the TE from getting a clean reach block. Watch for a safety rotating down into the box pre-snap, that extra body erases the numbers advantage and shuts down the bounce read.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only call this into 6 or fewer defenders in the box to avoid a numbers disadvantage.
Use the RB's jab step to freeze linebackers and manually bounce the run outside once you see the edge defender get reached or washed inside.
Pair this with Inside Zone and Inside Zone Split from the same set so defenses cannot key on the bounce lane every snap.
Attack odd fronts and 3-4 looks where the edge is softer, since a wide 9 technique or crashing DE can be sealed easier by the TE.
Best used on early downs (1st and 10, 2nd and short) to keep the offense on schedule and set up Counter Y or Lead Read Option as complementary calls later in the series.
