Defensive Reads
Watch linebacker depth at the snap since Mesh Spot is designed to pick off man defenders trailing the crossers, so if you see linebackers sitting at a shallow depth they are likely in man and will get picked. Identify single high versus two high safety shells before the snap, since a two high look tells you the spot route underneath the corner will be the easiest completion. Key the flat and curl/flat zone defenders after the snap, because if they widen too fast to cover the spot route that opens the mesh crossers working underneath for an easy pitch and catch. Look for a slot corner or nickel defender sitting in a lurk position near the mesh crosser, since a smart user controlled defender there can jump the rub route and blow up the entire concept. This play struggles against aggressive Cover 3 sky or Cover 4 match zones with disciplined linebackers, since sinking zone defenders can wall off both the spot route and the crossers, forcing a low percentage shot on the corner route.
Usage Tips
Pre-snap, check for man coverage indicators like tight press alignment on the outside receivers since the mesh crossers are designed to rub off defenders and create natural separation. If you see two deep safeties splitting the field, prioritize the spot route sitting down underneath the corner route rather than forcing the vertical shots. Use the corner route as a hot read versus Cover 3 or Cover 4 shells where the flat defender has to widen, since that opens a throwing lane right at the boundary. Hot route the vertical receiver into a shorter option if you are facing a heavy blitz look, since the mesh concept alone gives you a built in checkdown through the crossers. Pair this play with Shallow Cross earlier in a series so the defense starts keying underneath crossers, then come back to Mesh Spot to hit the corner route deep once linebackers start jumping the shallow routes.
