Inside Zone out of Shotgun Deuce is a straightforward zone run play with the running back aligned offset behind the quarterback. The diagram shows the offensive line executing a zone blocking scheme with double team combos designed to climb to the second level, while both tight ends stay in to seal the edges. This is a pure run play with no pass options attached, and the primary read progression for the running back is to press the play side gap and read the frontside double team block before deciding to bend it back or cut through the first natural crease.
Defensive Reads
Watch for stacked linebackers at depth since that alignment usually means inside zone will be filled quickly by user aggression at the mesh point. Identify one high safety shells such as Cover 1 or Cover 3, since these often leave light boxes vulnerable to inside zone if the defensive line does not get penetration. Key the defensive tackles post snap, if they get vertical push and collapse the double team the back has to bounce rather than hit downhill. Watch for a blitzing linebacker shooting the play side gap pre-snap, since Deuce formations with 12 personnel are common nano blitz triggers against inside run plays. If the defense sends extra run support from depth or crashes the edge with the tight ends' blocks, expect the cutback lane to open on the backside.
Usage Tips
Check the box count before the snap and only run this into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the tackle box.
Use pre-snap motion or shifts sparingly since Deuce with 12 personnel already signals run to disciplined defenders, so mix in Bounce Inside Zone Split from this same set to keep defenders honest on the edges.
If the defense shows a two high safety shell with light second level linebackers, this play hits fastest through the frontside A or B gap.
Pair this call with PA Slide or PA Y Leak later in the series once the defense starts crashing hard on early down zone runs, since the run action sells the play fake.
On third and short use Inside Zone as a clock control tool but be ready to bail into Lead Read Option if the defense loads the box with an extra man pre-snap.
