PA Slide out of Shotgun Deuce runs play action off the run fake with the offensive line sliding protection to sell the run look before setting up to pass block. The route diagram shows a deep out breaking route from the backside receiver, a corner route from the tight end releasing vertically then working to the sideline, and a slide route out of the backfield that runs a swing action to the flat before turning upfield. This is a play-action man beater that stresses the flat to deep sideline horizontally, with the primary read starting on the flat/slide route and working up to the corner route if the underneath defender sits.

Defensive Reads

Watch the flat defender's initial reaction to the run fake, if he bites hard on the play action the slide route to the backfield will be wide open for an easy completion. Key the deep half safety on the corner route side, if he stays deep and outside he can undercut or contest the sideline throw. Look for linebackers staying home instead of flowing with the run fake, which signals the defense is respecting play action and will clog the underneath throwing lanes. Man coverage with no safety help over the top on the corner route is the biggest indicator this play will hit for an explosive gain. Zone coverage that keeps a defender spying the slide route out of the backfield or a linebacker sinking under the corner route will take away both primary options and force a checkdown or scramble.

Usage Tips

Run this on early downs when you have established inside zone or Tear Speed Option tendencies to sell the run fake and freeze linebackers. Check the flat defender pre-snap: if he is sitting on the slide route, hot route him to a deeper route or move to your next progression quickly. Use this against man coverage and single high safety looks since the corner route and slide combo create natural leverage against man defenders trying to trail. Pair this with Inside Zone or Bounce Inside Zone Split earlier in a series to condition the defense to bite on the run action, then hit them with PA Slide once linebackers start creeping up. If the defense shows two high safeties pre-snap, consider audibling to RPO Read Snag or RPO Read Y Flat instead since PA Slide loses some effectiveness against soft zone shells.
