Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets exploited by the wheel route beating a linebacker in space. Zone shells with disciplined underneath defenders who do not bite on the run fake can clog the wheel and force a tighter window on the corner or post, so be ready to check down or extend the play if the initial pocket allows.

Usage Tips

Use the jet motion pre-snap to identify if the defense follows the motion man, since a linebacker or safety trailing the motion is a strong indicator of man coverage and a green light for the wheel route. Save this play for third and medium or second and long situations where defenses are more likely to sell out on the run fake with the play action. Hot route the underneath TE into a shallow drag if you see heavy underneath zone coverage sitting on the wheel and corner combo. Pair this with Tear Speed Option or Inside Zone earlier in a series so the defense respects the run action and bites harder on the play fake when you finally call Exit PA Wheel. If the defense shows two deep safeties pre-snap, key on the corner route since one safety will likely be forced to choose between the wheel and the post, opening a window on the corner.
