Bench Swap out of Shotgun Deuce (12 personnel) shows a bench route concept to the left with a deep dig or corner breaking outside plus a shorter comeback underneath, while the right side runs a swap concept with a TE releasing into the flat as a checkdown and a receiver pushing vertically up the sideline on a go route. The backfield/slot runs a quick pivot or return route in the middle to occupy underneath zone defenders and give the quarterback a hot option versus pressure. This is a man beater built on the swap and bench crossing action creating natural picks and separation, with the primary read starting on the boundary bench/comeback combo before working to the backside vertical against off coverage or single high shells.
Defensive Reads
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing two high safeties or single high, since single high leaves the backside go route on an island versus man coverage. Watch linebacker depth at the snap: if they widen quickly to the flat on the swap action, the middle pivot route will be wide open behind them. Man coverage with no safety help over the top gets beaten badly by the vertical route on the right, so user your deep defender to bracket that receiver if you suspect this play is coming. Zone coverage that keeps underneath defenders sitting at their landmarks will collapse the bench route window, so squeeze your curl-flat defender to take away that breakout throw. Nano blitzes or aggressive edge pressure can disrupt the timing of this concept, since the QB needs a beat to let the bench and swap routes develop, so bring interior pressure if you want to force an early or errant throw.
Usage Tips
Check the safety alignment pre-snap: a single high safety means the backside go route can win over the top if the corner presses, so be ready to hot route the far outside receiver on a fade if you see man coverage. Against Cover 3 or Cover 4 zone shells, work the middle pivot route as your first read since it settles into the soft spot between underneath zones. Use motion or a hard count to bait linebackers into showing blitz, since the swap concept exploits late rotating linebackers who overcommit to the flat. Pair this play with Inside Zone or Lead Read Option in the same set to keep defenses honest on run fits before coming back to Bench Swap on early downs. On third and medium, prioritize the bench route breakout since it settles right at the sticks and is tough for zone defenders to undercut if you throw with anticipation.
