Defensive Reads

Watch for a linebacker spy or a robber defender sitting in the shallow zone, that is the biggest threat to the primary drag read. Cover 2 or Cover 4 shells with underneath zone defenders sitting on crossing routes can bait the quarterback into a low percentage throw, so check the deep out and corner route as zone beaters instead. If the defense shows a nano blitz or an overload look pre-snap, get the ball out quickly on the shallow drag since the route develops fast and beats blitz timing. User controlled defenders lurking in the shallow zone or jumping the drag route are the main threat, so double check the flat and hook zones before committing to that throw.

Usage Tips

Take a pre-snap look at linebacker depth because a shallow drag needs a soft underneath zone or man matchup on a slower defender to hit cleanly.

Peek the corner over the left X route first, if he sinks with the deep out it opens a natural rub for the shallow drag crossing behind him.

Use motion or a quick hot route check on the right TE corner route if you diagnose two deep safeties, since that route is more of a bail out option against zone shells.

Pair this call with Mesh Spot or PA Slide in the same set so defenses that key on the drag concept get punished by play-action or a different crossing combo the next snap.

Best deployed on second and medium or third and short since the shallow drag is designed to pick up positive yardage quickly against man coverage.
