Breakdown
Shallow Cross out of Shotgun Deuce (12 personnel) sends both outside receivers on deep overs, with the boundary X clearing out on a red deep in-breaking route while the field-side receiver runs a deep crossing route to the opposite sideline. Underneath, the slot receiver runs a true shallow cross under the linebackers all the way across the field, and the TE to the closed side runs a corner route from the flat. This is a classic man beater built on natural pick and rub action, with the shallow crosser as the primary read against man coverage and the deep crossers as the answer if zone defenders sink or a lurk player jumps the shallow.
Defensive Reads
Man coverage with no safety help over the middle is the biggest weakness here, since the shallow crosser will consistently separate off the natural pick from the formation width. Watch for a linebacker or safety sitting in a shallow hook zone or lurking underneath, since that defender can jump the shallow crosser's route and bait a turnover if the quarterback stares it down. Cover 3 with an aggressive robber player can take away both the shallow cross and the underneath flat route, forcing the quarterback to hold the ball and look to the deep crossers late. Pre-snap, check corner depth and safety rotation, since a two high shell with corners playing off suggests zone drops that will clog the shallow crosser's lane and reward patience on the deep crossing routes instead. Post-snap, if you see the middle linebacker sprint flat across the field mirroring the shallow route, that is a strong indicator of man coverage or a spy, and the quarterback should climb the pocket and reset eyes to the far crosser.
Usage Tips
Use this on second and medium or third and short to mid distance situations where the shallow crosser can pick up the sticks with room to run after the catch.
Pre-snap, identify if the defense is showing man coverage by checking for a single high safety and tight corner alignment on the outside receivers, since the rub from the formation will spring the shallow crosser open.
If you see a robber or lurk defender sitting in the shallow middle zone, work the deep crossing routes instead and let the receiver work away from the flow of the coverage.
Hot route the backside TE into a quick out or flat route if the defense shows a hard blitz look, giving the quarterback an emergency outlet away from the shallow crosser's path.
