RPO Alert Bubble is a run pass option out of Pistol Trips that pairs an inside zone handoff look with a bubble screen to the slot receiver in the trips bunch. The offensive line and TE execute the zone blocking scheme playside while the outside trips receiver runs a quick out to occupy the corner and the slot receiver bubbles behind the line of scrimmage for the alert throw. The primary read is the alert key defender (usually the second level flow defender or slot corner): if he crashes downhill on the run action, pull and fire the bubble; if he sits or bubbles out to cover the screen, hand it off on zone.

Defensive Reads

Watch the slot defender over the bubble receiver at snap since his run fit versus flat drop tells the offense which side of the RPO to take. This play beats light boxes and man coverage on the outside trips receiver, since the out route clears space for the bubble receiver to work underneath. Zone coverage with a disciplined slot defender who sits and reads mesh point can shut this down by staying home on the bubble instead of crashing the run fit. User-controlled defenders who key the QB's eyes and jump the bubble lane immediately can blow this play up before the alert key even declares. Watch for overload blitzes from the trips side since a fast edge rusher can disrupt the mesh point before the RPO read fully develops, forcing a rushed or blind pitch.

Usage Tips

Pre-snap, identify the slot defender over your bubble receiver and see if he is aligned to play run first or sitting in space to jump the screen.

Use this on early downs like first and second and short to medium yardage since the RPO gives you a built-in answer to both light and heavy boxes.

If the defense shows a stacked box with the slot corner cheating inside, take the automatic bubble read without hesitation for a quick access throw.

Pair this play with straight HB Dive or HB Zone Wk earlier in a series so defenders start keying run fits hard, which sets up the bubble alert as a home run counter.

Sequence RPO Alert Bubble with RPO Zone Alert Bubble to keep the defense guessing on which side of the zone flow the alert key sits, forcing hesitation from linebackers and slot defenders.
