Strong Y Off Close

Overview

Strong Y Off Close is the heaviest look in Pistol, pairing a fullback or second back offset strong with a tight end aligned tight to the formation and the receivers pulled in close to the tackles. That compression is the entire point: instead of the spread splits you get out of Pistol Ace or Pistol Wing sets, everything lives inside the numbers, which shortens throwing windows for the defense but also collapses the box and forces safeties to make run/pass declarations early. The Pistol depth keeps the back at four yards, so the mesh point on HB Dive, HB Zone, and HB Counter happens fast enough that a user linebacker cannot sit and read without giving up the gap.

Strengths

  • Compressed splits create natural rub and traffic on Spot Lead Swing and Z Slant Y Corner, so the flat route and the corner route both come open against Cover 3 and Cover 4 without any hot routes needed.
  • Read Option out of Pistol with 21 personnel is a legitimate zone read look, and the extra back gives you a lead blocker on the keep, punishing users who crash the end with a defensive lineman.
  • Y Cross is a premium zone beater from tight alignment because the tight end clears the second level before the crossing route enters the void, and the offset back checks and releases into the flat as a free outlet against man.
  • HB Slip Screen sells hard from this look since the defense reads run first, and the compressed receivers are already in position to block downfield rather than needing to crack from wide splits.
  • PA Slide punishes aggressive edge users after a diet of HB Counter and HB Dive, rolling the quarterback away from the pressure and giving him the sideline as a second read.

Weaknesses

  • Only two true receiving threats are on the field, so single high man coverage with a user in the middle of the field can bracket the tight end and take away Y Cross and Y Corner at the same time.
  • Tight splits mean outside cornerbacks are already in leverage position, and press man from a compressed alignment kills Trail Speed Out before the route stems.
  • Inside blitz and A gap nano pressure gets home quickly because the pass concepts are slow developing and the offset back is often assigned a release rather than a check.
  • The set telegraphs run in obvious situations. Opponents who commit to run blitzes and heavy fronts on second and short force you into low percentage throws with no vertical stretch.
  • There is no built in four verticals or deep shot concept, so trailing late you have to abandon the set entirely rather than audible within it.

Usage Tips

Establish HB Zone and HB Counter early so the play action and screen game carry weight later. PA Slide and HB Slip Screen are only lethal after the defense has seen the run twice.

Against single high, motion the tight end or hot route the offset back to a flat to create a three level read and pull the user defender out of the middle before running Y Cross.

On third down under five yards, Spot Lead Swing is your safest concept. Read the spot route against zone and the swing against man, and check the flat first if the defense shows blitz.

Read Option is best used against defenses that user control a linebacker instead of the edge, because the read key stays honest and the give is almost always there.

Hot route the compressed outside receiver to a slant or drag when you see press man, since Trail Speed Out and the corner route both need cushion to work from tight splits.
