Spot Lead Swing out of Pistol Strong Y Off Close is a classic Spot concept married to a lead swing route out of the backfield. The backside receiver runs a deep drag to clear space while the two receivers on the strong side run a spot combo: a corner route stretching the deep third and a hitch/flat sitting underneath, with the fullback releasing on a swing route out to the sideline for a shallow outlet. This is a Cover 3 beater built off the spot triangle, using the corner route to hold the deep defender while the hitch and swing occupy the underneath zone defenders, creating a natural progression read from corner to hitch to swing.
Defensive Reads
Presnap identify the deep third safety alignment. A single high safety cheating to the strong side tips Cover 3 and signals the spot triangle should be live. Watch the flat or curl to flat defender at the snap. If he sinks under the corner route he opens up the hitch, if he jumps the hitch the corner route is open behind him. Key the underneath linebacker depth. Shallow drops from linebackers can undercut the swing route to the fullback, so check if the backside linebacker is sprinting outside to the flat before targeting the swing. Cover 4 and Cover 2 shells with two deep safeties can squeeze the corner route window, forcing the quarterback to live in the shorter hitch and swing combo. Man coverage with a blitz look is the biggest threat to this concept since it removes the zone conflict defenders that the spot triangle relies on, so identify man leverage on the outside receivers presnap and be ready to bail into the swing route as a quick answer.
Usage Tips
Use this play on early downs or third and short when you expect zone coverage, since the spot triangle is designed to break down Cover 3 and Cover 4 zone drops.
Read the flat defender first. If he sits on the hitch, throw the corner route behind him for a big chunk gain.
If the defense shows a hard zone shell presnap with the corner rolling to the deep third, work the swing route to the fullback as your check down against a squeezed underneath zone.
Pair this call with Trail Speed Out or Z Slant Y Corner in the same set to keep defenders guessing between quick game and intermediate spot concepts.
Against man coverage look immediately to the corner route since the spot concept loses some of its effectiveness without zone defenders sitting in windows, so have a hot route ready to convert the hitch into a speed out if you see man alignment presnap.
