Defensive Reads

Identify if the defense is in a 4-3 under or over front, because heavy fronts with extra defenders in the box will clog the interior gaps and force you to bail to the backside cutback immediately. Post-snap, key the play side defensive end and any user controlled defender crashing the line, since a hard crash opens the bounce outside while a contain read forces the cutback. This play struggles against gap exchange run blitzes and defenses that stack the box with eight defenders, since the fullback and TE combo blocks get overwhelmed. It beats base 4-3 and 3-4 looks with linebackers reading run late, along with light boxes out of nickel personnel where the defense is playing pass first.
Usage Tips
Run this out of Pistol on early downs like 1st and 10 or 2nd and short to stay ahead of the chains without tipping pass. Check the box count pre-snap and only call HB Zone into light boxes with six or fewer defenders in the box, since the interior blocking scheme cannot handle extra run support. Use the left stick to press the initial hole and manually cut back if you see the backside linebacker flow too hard playside, since the cutback lane is the built in explosive play here. Pair this with HB Dive and HB Counter from the same set to keep linebackers guessing on tempo and gap, then hit Read Option once they start crashing down hard on zone action. Against aggressive user blitzers, snap the ball quickly to beat the defender to the mesh point before penetration disrupts the zone flow.
