Read Option out of Pistol Strong Y Off Close is a true zone read run play with 21 personnel on the field. The QB and HB mesh in the backfield with the offensive line stepping into an inside zone blocking scheme, while the QB reads the backside end man on the line of scrimmage to decide between handing off on the zone track or pulling it and attacking the edge himself. This is a base run play designed to beat light boxes and overaggressive defensive ends, with the primary read progression starting on the unblocked EMOL and finishing with the QB's eyes on the alley defender if he keeps it.
Watch the backside defensive end pre-snap since his depth and technique tell you whether the offense will get a clean give read or a QB keep read. If the DE stays disciplined and sits on the mesh point, that forces a tougher decision for the QB and slows down the zone read hesitation. Key the alley defender, usually a safety or slot corner, because he is the true tackler on any QB keep to the edge. Man coverage with a spy or a designated QB contain defender takes away the keep option and forces the offense into the dive every time. Stacked boxes with eight or more defenders crowd the inside zone lanes and should signal the offense to abandon this call for a play-action shot instead.
Check the box count before the snap and only call this against 6 or fewer defenders in the box to keep the numbers advantage in the run game. Identify whether the defense is crashing the read man hard upfield, since that is your cue to pull the ball and attack the edge with the QB. Use this play on early downs like first and ten or second and short to stay ahead of the chains and keep the defense honest. Pair Read Option with HB Dive and HB Zone from the same set so the defense has to respect multiple gap schemes off identical formation and personnel look. Sequence it with PA Slide or Y Cross later in the series once the defense starts cheating a linebacker down to stop the zone read look.
