Z Slant Y Corner is a two-level route concept out of Pistol Strong Y Off Close 21 personnel that attacks the middle and deep outside edge simultaneously. The Y (TE) releases from a tight alignment and works a deep corner route to the boundary, while the Z runs a quick slant across the middle read by the QB in red. Both HBs release from the backfield on wheel routes up the sidelines, giving the offense a five man route concept with no dedicated blockers, making this a full pass play designed to stress zone defenses by clearing out the middle for the slant while occupying flat and deep outside defenders with the wheel routes and Y corner. The primary read starts with the slant from the Z, then progresses to the Y corner if the middle is taken away, with the wheel routes serving as home run outlets versus man coverage or blown assignments.
Defensive Reads
Key the middle linebacker depth at the snap since a shallow drop signals he will jump the slant route immediately. Watch for a user controlled safety sitting in a deep middle hole, as this alignment is designed to take away the Y corner throw and force the ball into the slant. Identify man coverage on the outside cornerbacks pre-snap, since tight man alignment on the wheel routes leaves them exposed if the HB gets a clean release. Look for a nano blitz or interior pressure package, since this play has no inline blocker help and the QB can get hit quickly if the pocket collapses. Diagnose zone versus man post-snap by watching if the linebacker covering the slant opens his hips to run with the receiver or sits in a passing lane.
Usage Tips
Look for two high safety shells pre-snap since the slant and corner combo work well against split safety zone coverage that leaves the middle of the field vulnerable.
If you see man coverage with a linebacker on the Y, hot route the wheel routes to full speed releases and target them against slower defenders who cannot stay on top.
Use this play on second and medium to third and long situations where the defense expects a longer developing play and may sit back in zone.
Pair this with HB Dive or Read Option earlier in a series to get linebackers to bite on run action, then come back to this slant and corner combo to exploit cheating defenders.
Combine with Y Cross from the same set to give defenses a similar initial look but a different crossing pattern, keeping second level defenders guessing on route direction.
